The Troubles ground on, and Ireland struggled with the economy — oil prices were high, inflation was biting, and unemployment was rising. Emigration began to pick up again after a decade of relative stability. But cultural life was rich: traditional music was experiencing a revival driven by Planxty, the Bothy Band, and Christy Moore.

Irish music was finding a new generation of fans both at home and abroad. Something deep in the culture was being reclaimed.
