• 4 March – Legendary hurler Christy Ring was buried in Cork.
• 31 May – The Minister for Posts and Telegraphs, Pádraig Faulkner, launched a second national radio station, RTÉ Radio 2.
• 7 June – The first European Parliament election was held in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
• 20 July – The Council for Development in Agriculture (An Chomhairle Oiliúna Talmhaíochta) was established. Its functions would later be taken over by Teagasc in 1988
• 9 August – The first group of Vietnamese refugees arrived in Ireland.
• 29 September – Pope John Paul II arrived at Dublin Airport for a three-day visit to Ireland. A quarter of the population, 1.25 million people, welcomed him at a mass in the Phoenix Park. Later, he spoke to 200,000 people at Drogheda, County Louth.
• 1 October – The Pope visited the Nunciature at Maynooth College and celebrated mass before 400,000 people in Limerick. He then left Shannon Airport for Boston in the United States.
• 7 December – The new headquarters of the Central Bank of Ireland were officially opened on Dame Street in Dublin.
