Ireland formally joined the European Economic Community — an enormous moment. Farmers celebrated, as European farm subsidies would dramatically improve their incomes. The country was opening up.

The oil crisis hit globally, and Ireland, which imported almost all its fuel, was badly affected. But the EEC membership felt like a doorway into a bigger, more prosperous world. A generation that had grown up in poverty was beginning to dare to imagine something different.
