Back in 1990, the world felt like it was shifting on its axis, but at home, things were oddly comforting. If you popped into the local, you’d likely find us nursing a pint of Tetley’s or a glass of dry white wine while Gazza’s tears at Italia '90 were still the main topic of conversation. The sun seemed to bake the pavements that summer, providing the perfect backdrop for Adamski’s "Killer" blaring out of every open window.

We were all obsessed with *Twin Peaks*—though none of us really knew what was going on—and if you weren't glued to the telly for *Blind Date*, you were probably at the cinema watching Macaulay Culkin outsmart those burglars in *Home Alone*. Kids were driving their mums mad for Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles figures, while we grown-ups were adjusting to the shock of Margaret Thatcher finally leaving Number 10. It was the era of the shiny shell suit and neon-bright skip caps, and dinner was often something simple like a Findus Crispy Pancake followed by a Viennetta for a treat.

It wasn't perfect, what with the Poll Tax riots making the news, but there was a buzz in the air, a feeling that a brand-new decade was just getting warmed up.
