What Was Life Really Like?

Back in 2013, it felt like the whole country was finally shaking off a bit of a hangover and actually enjoying itself. We’d just had the high of the Olympics, and suddenly everyone was obsessed with that "Great British Summer" feeling, especially when Andy Murray finally went and won Wimbledon and the sun actually stayed out for once. You couldn’t walk past a pub without hearing Avicii’s "Wake Me Up" or Daft Punk’s "Get Lucky" blasting out of the beer garden, while everyone sipped on Rekorderlig cider or tucked into a cheeky Nando’s.

If you weren’t glued to *Broadchurch* on a Monday night trying to figure out who’d done it, you were probably arguing about the series finale of *Breaking Bad*. The kids were all obsessed with *Despicable Me 2* and those little yellow Minions were absolutely everywhere you looked, usually right next to someone hunched over their phone playing *Candy Crush* on the morning commute. It was the year we all went a bit mad for "The Harlem Shake" and "The Fox" by Ylvis, and I still remember the absolute scramble to get a Flappy Bird high score before it got deleted.

It was simpler, somehow—just it, us, and the radio.
