What Was Life Really Like?
The Good Friday Agreement was signed in April, and the island exhaled. A 32-county referendum endorsed it overwhelmingly — the people of Ireland, north and south, said yes to peace with a clarity that politicians had to honour. The Omagh bomb in August — the worst single atrocity of the Troubles — was a horrific attempt to derail the peace.
It failed. The agreement held. Ireland was at peace, and the country's joy was almost impossible to contain.
