The divorce referendum was held again — this time passing, narrowly, by 50.3% to 49.7%.
Ireland now allowed civil divorce, ending one of the most contentious debates in the state's history. The Celtic Tiger was roaring: 7% growth, record employment, emigration reversed as Irish people began returning home from London and New York. Braveheart was the big film.
