What Was Life Really Like?

Ireland held a referendum on the Single European Act — a step toward greater European integration that passed comfortably. The EC was becoming more central to Irish life: European money was building roads and universities, European regulations were modernising agriculture, and the idea of being European as well as Irish was taking hold, particularly among the young. U2 were the biggest band in the world.

Ireland was finding new ways to be proud of itself.
