Ireland applied to join the European Economic Community for the second time, having been rejected alongside Britain in 1963. The application would eventually succeed in 1973, transforming the country. In the meantime, the economy was growing, emigration was slowing, and a young population was beginning to stay at home.

Colour television was still unavailable in Ireland, but people were crowding into shops to look at the sets in the windows.
