Ireland voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment by 66% — ending the near-absolute constitutional ban on abortion and allowing the Oireachtas to legislate. The Yes vote was larger and more decisive than almost anyone had predicted. Ireland had, within three years, voted for marriage equality and abortion rights — a transformation in social policy that left some older Irish people feeling the country had become unrecognisable.

For younger people, it felt like their Ireland was finally arriving.
