But 1975 also brought the Emergency — Indira Gandhi suspended civil liberties, jailed opponents, and imposed censorship. The combination of Sholay's extraordinary entertainment and the Emergency's grim authoritarianism made 1975 one of the most contradictory years in modern Indian history.
