What Was Life Really Like?

The States Reorganisation Act redrew India's map along linguistic lines, creating new states and setting off celebrations and protests in equal measure. The country now had states for Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam speakers. Radio Ceylon was the most popular station in the country, playing Hindi film songs that All India Radio considered too frivolous.

Meena Kumari and Guru Dutt were the icons of Indian cinema, their tragic films reflecting the melancholy beauty of the era.
